How to Deal with a Newly Promoted Boss - The Muse
How to Deal with a Newly Promoted Boss - The MuseHow to Deal with a Newly Promoted Boss So, yur new boss is, well, new- either at the company, at being a manager, or at both. While this can be exciting, it can also lead to frustrating challenges that youve never dealt with before. Yes, this persons (hopefully) qualified to do the job. But no, he or shes not going to be the perfect manager from day one. So, how can you handle this situation without letting that person affect your work or general well-being? There are a few strategies that Ive picked up after being in this position a few times- they not only made it easier, but also furthered my career. 1. Offer to HelpBeing a new manager can be a little overwhelming and a little lonely. So, take a look at what your new boss is struggling with and try to identify opportunities where you can step in and help.Maybe hes having trouble wrangling team updates from everyone, or way behind on a stack of crucial paperwork, or even just struggl ing with the companys internal technology. If you have the knowledge, offer a hand. And if you dont have that, but you do have the time, offer to do something you do know how to do. Sure, he can finish that spreadsheet this week, but offer to do it today so its one less thing for him to think about.Youll earn brownie points and have the potential to become his new right-hand person. 2. Take manahmeIts likely that your boss is so busy with learning his or her new responsibilities that shes not focusing on new projects, or even peripheral ones, if they arent aligned with the departments core goals (no matter how promising they are, or how in-depth they were discussed with a previous manager). When one of my new supervisors started in her role, with a focus on the companys new products, I noticed that our blogging and social media efforts started to lag. Rather than sit around and watch our followers plateau, I set up a meeting with her, showed her what could be gained from keeping up o ur editorial and social platforms, offered to take it on, and set up a good time for me to fill her in on the progress. She said yes. That one conversation ended up opening many doors for me both within that company as well as with other potential employers. Plus, my boss greatly appreciated that she ended up looking good in the process, too, which wasnt a bad way to kick off a new relationship. 3. Play Along With Your Boss Micromanaging (at First)Its pretty common for people to micromanage their first couple of weeks (or months) on the job. While its easy to want to rebel upon the first bogus request your new boss makes (She wants to personally edit every client schmelzglasle I send out), take a deep breath and remember this likely isnt permanent. Instead, its probably your managers way of getting a lay of the land and learning not only what you do, but how it plays into the teams larger effort. However, if this habit keeps going (or gets worse), you should definitely consider takin g action. Dont feel like you can talk to your supervisor upfront about it quite yet? Try getting ahead of it. For example, do you know your manager is going to ask to see your client emails before you send them out? Send the drafts to him before he asks to prove that youre on top of your game.In most cases, managers (especially new ones) are looking for people they can count on to stay on top of their own work. The sooner you show this person that she has nothing to worry about with you, the sooner shell get off your back.4. Dont Shoot Down Every New Idea Your Boss HasJust because your manager is new doesnt mean that he doesnt have good ideas. In fact, he was (ideally) hired because he does. However, that doesnt mean hell walk in the door and immediately know which great ideas work for your company. So rather than refusing and just saying weve always done things this way, explain why. (Its a classic show, dont tell scenario.)One of my new bosses felt like our team was fragmented and suggested starting an email chain to update one another with our daily progress. While her thinking made sense, our team knew this would quickly get annoying. But rather than Reply All to her with a no, I told her one-on-one that I loved her idea (we were too fragmented) and I wanted to offer up a suggestion What if we did this over Slack instead? I explained it was actually better than email because Slack was much more efficient (not to mention, all of our inboxes wouldnt be clogged with unrelated messages). Rather than turning down her idea, I helped her to make it a stronger one. Having a new person in charge doesnt have to be a drag- it can actually be an important and exciting career opportunity if you let itPhoto of computer help courtesy of Shutterstock.

Science says that sleeping on it actually works
Science says that sleeping on it actually worksScience says that sleeping on it actually worksWhen you are working through a tricky problem in your head, you may want to sleep on it. New research published in theJournal of Sleep Researchfound that a daytime snooze can help us wake up with new insights on how to tackle a challenge. How sleeping on it helps us think betterTo test the brain-boosting power of a nap, researchers from the University of Bristol recruited 16 healthy participants to complete a word-response task that had implicit clues on how to answer and a control task. They then either had to either stay awake or had the opportunity to take a 90-minute nap before doing the tasks again. The short snooze helped. You may leid look like you are doing much during a nap, but underneath your resting eyes, your mind is rapidly facilitating the processing of unconscious information. Researchers found that this short nap was enough to help participants score higher on the task with hid den clues.Even a short bout of sleep may be sufficient for nuanced implicit cue processing and improved accuracy of response, the study concluded.Daytime naps can not only help you process unconscious information, but they can also improve memory. A one-hour nap after lunch improved 3,000 peoples ability to recall tasks better. Nap haters say that a nap is an easy way for us to put off our problems. But if you need a new way of thinking, rest your weary eyes and sleep on the problem. You may wake up with a new answer you never would have dreamed up before.

Why Some Jobs re Only Open to Internal Applicants
Why Some Jobs re Only Open to Internal ApplicantsWhy Some Jobs re Only Open to Internal ApplicantsHiring managers sometimes post job openings for internal applicants only. This means that onlyemployees who currently work for the company or organization can apply for avacant position. Why would they do this? There are a few reasons. Someone Familiar With the OrganizationIs Preferred The hiring manager might need someone with particular organizational knowledge. For example, someone hiring a senior-level subject matter expert might limit applicants to current employees in an effort to produce an applicant pool of junior-level subject matter experts and other current employees. The manager is likely to know alfruchtwein all viable applicants. If the manager does not know them personally, he at least has an idea of their reputations around the office or can easily make contact with a teamberaterin who does. Someone is Already in Mind Another reason a hiring manager might limit a pplicants is that he already has one or a few people in mind for a position and he doesnt want to spend time working through a large applicant pool when he doesnt intend to hire any of them. In government agencies, in particular, hiring managers cannot promote someone without allowing others to formally indicate their interest in the opportunity. Limiting the pool provides a legally justifiable defense for excluding people from the hiring process. Saves Time Hiring managers want to save time where they can. Posting to internal applicants only can achieve this, but it can also come back to bite them. A huge drawback to posting as internal only is how limited the applicant pool becomes. Hiring managers certainly exclude many people who could do the job satisfactorily, if not excellently. If they end up with an insufficient applicant pool, they might have to re-post the position or force themselves into bad hires that wouldnt otherwise have been made. Promoting Current Employees A fourth reason for limiting the applicant pool is to ensure a maximum number of promotional opportunities for current employees. An organization trying to do this would post most mid- and upper-level jobs as internal only and advertise entry-level jobs as open to all applicants. The organization would divert from this practice if a hiring manager foresees no viable candidates or has to re-post a position after going through the hiring process with an internal applicant pool. Sometimes internal postings are restricted to particular parts of an organization. For example, a city might post a police detective position and restrict applicants to current city police officers. This would ensure that someone from within the police department would be promotedinto the position through a competitive selection process. The city would likely post the vacated police officer position to internal and external applicants after the detective position is filled. Doing this routinely means the poli ce department makes a big assumption the department will hire and retain police officers who have the aptitude to be detectives, then fill even higher ranks as these officers progression through their careers.

How to Get Over Your Fear of Looking for a New Job - The Muse
How to Get Over Your Fear of Looking for a New Job - The MuseHow to Get Over Your Fear of Looking for a New Job So, tell me, how does it feel to be back at work?Eyes bleary. Shoulders slumped. Dreading the thought of anotzu sich year stuck in this job.Ugh. Any of this sound familiar? But not to worry, right? Because youve probably already made a big new years resolution to get a different job this year. You are ready for a change. Youve dusted off your resume, youve taken a few deep breaths (and maybe some medicinal champagne), and you are confident that very shortly you can put this job in the rearview mirror.Except.One year from today, you could very well be in the saatkorn spot that you are now.Despite making big plans. Despite updating resumes. Despite declaring that this is the year of the amazing new job.You want to know why? It boils down to one simple thing fear.Fear of the unknown What if I cant find any job or career that I actually like?Fear of failure What if I try somethi ng new and I am completely terrible at it?Fears around money What if I take a new job, I hate it, they fire me, and I end up broke, homeless, or living on Aunt Julies couch. I cant go through another Golden Girls marathon. Not again.Fear keeps you stuck.Hey, Im the first to say that fighting biology is a hard fight. And this feeling, this knot in your stomach, is a biological reaction designed to keep us alive when we end up in risky situations.Changing jobs is risky because it can threaten your survival (remember Aunt Julie?). So, if you find yourself consistently procrastinating, putting off your networking, casually clicking away from LinkedIn job openings, or doing anything but updating your resume, youve probably got fear to thank for that. But just because you feel anxious, it doesnt have to stop you. Honestly, it can be a good thing because it means youre getting close to a change. And if you want a new job, it will be a change. Heres how to handle itHow to Get Through Your F earWhile we can all be prone to many fears, there is usually one thats at the top. So your first step to owning it is to figure out which one is scaring you the most. Are youWorried about money if you change jobs?Worried about leaving your routine or the work that you know?Worried about stepping into a new job and not being a success?Think on it, and write down what is causing you to panic. Then, take a deep breath. Take another one. Youre doing great Breathing is helpful- not only does it (very usefully) keep you alive, but it also oxygenates your brain. When you are afraid, you tend to take quick shallow breaths, depriving you of oxygen. No good When you slow down and start taking deep breaths through your stomach, you give your brain more oxygen and you become smarter. Being smarter is always useful when dealing with changeOK, now that youve taken a few deep breathes, take a look at your answer. If your best friend came to you and shared this with you, what advice would you give her?Go ahead, write that down. Now think about the smartest person you know What advice would he or she give to her? Feel free to channel your inner Oprah.Write that down, too.Take another deep breath and read what youve written. Not bad, right?Maybe you should take that advice Pick one small step that you can do in the next 24 hours (doesnt matter how small) and do it. Read a blog, phone a friend, sign up for a program, research something new, it doesnt matter. Action is the enemy of fear. Then, once you do that, do it again- and again, until you can look back and see that all your baby steps have led to an actual change. Adjust your timeline if needed (conquering one item a week rather than every day), but keep at it. Every time you check another small item off that list, youre chipping away at that feeling that you cant do this. Spoiler alert You canThe worst part about living in fear is that your anxiety magnifies itself when we dont define it. It looms over our shoulder in a va gue and threatening way. Optimize Your Job Search for the New Age in Recruiting Optimize Your Job Search for the New Age in Recruiting Prepare yourself to connect with recruiters while theyâre on the go.At Ladders, weâre committed to matching the right person with the right job - online and on the go. As our CEO Alex Douzet mentioned in a recent interview with Mashable, our vision is to provide a network for career and candidate exploration and interaction thatâs 100% mobile. Thatâs why weâve created apps like Job Search by Ladders for busy professionals like you.We also encourage the talent acquisition communities to mobilize their recruitment strategies to better suit your needs as a job seeker. This can be anything from building a mobile-responsive site so you can research a company during your commute, to using FaceTime and other video-conferencing tools to perform virtual interviews when youâre unable to travel to the employerâs location.Excitingly, we just launched a new app, â Ladders Recruiter,â for our more than 67,000 employers and recruiters so they can find and connect with you while o n the go. Here are five ways you can make it easier for them to find and hire you.Flesh out your profiles. Make sure all of your professional profiles are complete and consistent with your resume. The last thing you want to do is send the hiring manager mixed signals by reflecting your work experience and job goals differently across different platforms. The more you include in your profile, the easier it will be for recruiters to find you.Use the cloud. If a recruiter or hiring manager asks for your resume, donât make them wait until youâre in front of a computer to reply. Store a copy of your resume and any other important personal branding materials on a site like Dropbox or iCloud so you can bring your files anywhere and easily share them while on the go.Include your mobile phone number. If a recruiter is viewing your profile from âLadders Recruiterâ or your resume on their phone, they may want to contact you right away. By including your mobile phone number, youâre pr oviding recruiters with the option to call or text you immediately. Best yet â" you donât have to worry about an important email getting stuck in a spam folder.Know when to ignore a call. One of the benefits of having a smartphone is that you can work or job search from virtually anywhere at any time. However, just because Wi-Fi is available doesnât mean you should be. Before you decide to answer a call from a potential recruiter, make sure you can control the environment and are prepared to answer the callerâs questions.Assess your phoneâs voicemail. The beauty of using your cell phone for your job search is that you have full control over the voicemail message, who picks up the phone, and when. First, make sure your phoneâs mailbox is set up to receive messages. Then, record a professional message. Remember, you only get one chance to make a first impression. Donât let an unprofessional voicemail message derail a potentially valuable connection.Click on the following link to learn more about mobilizing your job search.

An Interview Process Protocol Leads to Better Hires
An Interview Process Protocol Leads to Better Hires An Interview Process Protocol Leads to Better Hires Sure, Colbert, Kimmel, Noah, Bee and Winfrey make the interview process look like a snap, but that's because these TV talk show hosts had lots of preparation and practice - not to mention tremendous creative teams backing them. Many hiring managers think they can just wing it during interviews, not investing the time, energy or concentration that effective job interviewing requires. Thatâs no laughing matter because hiring on the basis of a faulty interview can leave you with underperforming employees who cost you in terms of both time and money. Create a protocol for interviews so you have a set way to determine the best hire for your business. Hereâs how. Decide who will conduct the interview Itâs best for the hiring manager to conduct one-on-one interviews with applicants first. He or she typically then chooses a few finalists to come in for a second interview. This is sometimes in the form of a time-saving panel interview, which includes the hiring manager and two to four members of the management team or work group who evaluate the candidate at the same time. Robert Half has been finding A-list candidates for companies since 1948. Let us take on the time-consuming steps and the administrative details of bringing a new person on board. REQUEST TALENT Zero in on the candidate Before asking the first interview question, review the job description, especially the hiring criteria, as well as everything the candidate has submitted: resume, cover letter, online profile and any other pertinent materials. This preparation is a significant part of the interview process because it allows you to hone in on what youâre looking for in the job candidates youâll be speaking with. It should give you ⦠Firsthand information about the candidateâs background, work experience and skill level. Itâs your chance to clarify what you learned from the resume, profile or previous interviews; A general sense of the candidateâs overall intelligence, aptitude, enthusiasm and attitudes, and whether he or she fits the job; Evaluation of the candidateâs motivation to tackle job responsibilities, desire to join the company and ability to integrate into the current work team. Decide what to ask Prior to the actual interview, write down questions you intend to ask, based on key areas of the candidateâs background. While itâs a good idea to have a core list of questions that you ask every candidate, itâs also helpful to jot down some targeted questions as you review the candidateâs job description and resume about areas in which you wish to gain clarification. Stay focused: Keep your list of questions in front of you during the interview. Mix up the types of questions you ask, but ask more open-ended questions since they require more thought on the part of the interviewee than closed-ended questions and will help the candidate open up. Ask hypothetical questions - two or three at the most - that are framed in the context of an actual job situation. Feel free to ask an off-the-wall question to see how the candidate thinks on his feet. Make every question count. Pay attention to the candidateâs answers; donât rehearse your next question in your mind. Although you have your questions written down, donât hesitate to veer from those if you want to reword or follow up on something, or to eliminate questions that were covered in a candidateâs response to another question. Hire the best candidate After youâve given the candidate a chance to ask questions, close the interview by thanking him for his time, and tell him when to expect to hear from you. As soon as the candidate leaves from the interview, collect your thoughts and write down your impressions and a summary of your notes. Collect feedback from other interviewers while the interview is fresh in everyoneâs mind. Selecting the right person for a position in your business isnât easy. If you find yourself second-guessing your decision, let the hiring criteria serve as your guide. Make sure any changes you make to your hiring criteria are because of a workplace need and not because youâre enamored with a particular candidate for subjective reasons. Focus on your business needs during your interview process, and youâll find the best new hire time after time. Learn more about how to get the most out of your interviews with candidates by reading the Robert Half blog.

Lessons from Xeroxs CTO Sophie Vandebroek
Lessons from Xeroxs CTO Sophie Vandebroek Lessons from Xeroxs CTO Sophie Vandebroek The seed of inspiration to pursue a science career is often sown quite early in life. For some it might happen at home and for others at school or during a visit to a science museum, but for a seven-year old girl it happened while watching TV at her grandmothers house and witnessing the first footsteps on the moon in 1969. Four decades later, Sophie Vandebroek, the little girl who dreamed of being an astronaut then, is now one of the handful of women engineers to be in a leading role at a Fortune 500 company. Through her role as CTO of Xerox, she is inspiring many other women to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers and challenging them to make a difference in the world. Engineering was one of the highest respected professions when she grew up in Belgium in the 1970s and 1980s, reminisces Vandebroek. There was no degree to be an astronaut, so I decided to pursue a double major electrical and mechanical engineering this was the closest to it, she says. In the mid-80s, she held a summer job at a research lab in Silicon Valley and decided to move to the U.S. in 1986 for graduate school. She earned a master's degree in electro-mechanical engineering from KU Leuven in Belgium and then completed her Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. Vandebroek joined Xerox in 1991 and rose through the ranks to become the CTO of the company in 2006. In addition to her CTO role, Vandebroek is also president of the Xerox Innovation Group, which oversees Xerox's research centers in Europe, Asia, Canada and the U.S., including the Palo Alto Research Center, PARC Inc in Silicon Valley. Balancing Work-Life Joining Xerox was one of the best decisions she made, says Vandebroek, and she continued to stay focused on her career and take on challenging projects even when she was abruptly widowed in 1996 and became a single mom of three young children. The day when my husband died had the biggest impact on my life and made me realize that so many things that we worry about in life are totally unimportant, she says.Who I am today is because of that event. Sophie Vandebroek encourages young women to pursue STEM careers. Looking back at her life, Vandebroek thinks, How did I ever do it? She and her husband had a balanced family life and then it changed suddenly. Being a single parent at 34 was extremely hard. I had to plan a lot, admits Vandebroek, who became more organized and simplified her life to cope with its demands. I had to prioritize time with my kids and at the same time do my work well, make sure I covered our expenses, and take care of my health. These became my top priorities. There were many other things that no longer happened such as maintaining a large array of friends. A lot of that had to go away. Outsourcing household work to babysitters and leveraging information technology to integrate work and life were some of the strategies she used over the years to balance her demanding career and family. Perhaps it is the same discipline and planning with which she managed her home that empower her today to steer the technology ship at Xerox and lead its five global research centers. So how does Vandebroek unwind? She reads, exercises, enjoys travel with her husband (she remarried five years ago), and spends time with her now young adult children. I live in Boston, she notes. When I travel for work, I add a day, for instance, in Europe to see my son, who is at graduate school, or my mom, who still lives there. When I visit our research lab in California, I stay an extra day with my daughter who works in San Francisco. Combining your work with life to the best possible is the only way to find a balance. Not Being a Trailblazer Vandebroek has been able to successfully move up the corporate ladder and raise three kids single-handedly, but what about the majority of the women in STEM? She agrees there are few women STEM executives. More girls should study STEM and corporations need to build a strong pipeline of women engineers and scientists to ensure more women leaders, she says. In Xeroxs engineering divisions, she informs, about 40% of recent college hires in the U.S. have been women. According to Vandebroek, one of the key reasons Xerox can attract women is that the company is linked to women networks in colleges. Also, when candidates come for an interview, they see many women role models including our CEO Ursula Burns, our CIO, CFO, CMO, our corporate controller, myself, and several of the women managers in research and engineering. Once the scale tips and you have women working on different projects in the company, she adds, it also makes it more natural that women move through managerial and leadership roles. Referring to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandbergs recent book, Vandebroek says, Just like Lean In states, women also need to know that it isOK to lean in and have a family while having a career. Women should work in a company where they dont need to be a trailblazer, she adds, where other women have gone through a similar career path and the company supports work-life balance. I was lucky, she says.Xerox has that culture. Many women executives paved the trail for me. Vandebroeks advice to young women in science, like her daughter who is now a civil and environmental engineer working on solving complex water resource problems, is: Dont be afraid to take on new opportunities, continuously educate yourself, and work on challenging projects that make a difference to the world. She also advises, Chose a project that you truly believe in so you love what you do. Embracing STEM Besides Xeroxs strong diversity culture, she values its fundamental belief that innovation, driven by STEM, is essential for growth. Xerox has been at the forefront of STEM education and collaborates with communities and universities in encouraging women and minorities to enter scientific careers. Xerox is also a founding member of FIRST Robotics, a program that inspires teenagers to embrace STEM. We have to teach young people, especially girls, early on in life that science is fun, she says. When you ask about her future vision for Xerox as its CTO, Vandebroek says: One of my most favorite quotes is the best way to predict the future is to create it. We have been doing this for over half a century and we will continue to innovate and create the future today.More girls should study STEM and corporations need to build a strong pipeline of women engineers and scientists to ensure more women leaders.Sophie Vandebroek

Im quietly judging you for using jargon at work
I'm quietly judging you for using jargon at work I'm quietly judging you for using jargon at work When reports came out today that Ford Motor could lay off 20,000 workers in North America and Asia, the company denied any plans for âpeople-efficiency actions.âExcuse us? âPeople-efficiency actionsâ?Ford is not the first, or even the most creative, to find new euphemisms for firing people. In the United Kingdom, layoffs are routinely called âredundancies,â a chilly dismissal indeed. Bank of America once termed its executive restructuring as a âde-layering,â implying some kind of executive-level exfoliation. You know the drill: efficiencies, workforce rationalization, pivots. Call it corporatespeak, business garble, office gobbledygook, whatever. The peculiar affliction that causes otherwise professional people to say âcircle backâ instead of âcheck back later.â Or âat this junctureâ instead of ânow.â Or my personal favorite, âtouch baseâ instead of âspeak again at a later date.âItâs bad enough to go through corporate changes; why must we als o be lost in translation? Would it be so bad for managers to just say what they mean?Hiding behind words to protect ourselvesIn the same way that menâs shirt collars represent ways to protect the throat from attackers, obfuscating language protects us from the consequences of our speech, shielding us from the blast of emotions through chilly, dry words. For example: âWe use strategic foresight tools to identify clientsâ previously unseen opportunities. Then effectively communicate that differentiation to their stakeholders, using our proven thought leadership methodology.âOr how about: âWe bring deep, functional expertise, but are known for our holistic perspective: we capture value across boundaries and between the silos of any organization.âNot even job descriptions are immune.âServes as a point of contact for functions relating to the social impact mission; may negotiate at all levels of management to secure input from an array of diverse units to achieve particular social impact goals.âIâd think about applying for that job, but I donât actually know what Iâd be doing. The cocoon of meaningless wordsI once worked in an office where âtouch baseâ got used a lot. To amuse myself, I pretended that it was a euphemism for having sex. It made the conversations I overheard a lot more entertaining.Eavesdropper entertainment aside, corporate communications professionals have mixed feelings about corporatespeak. Barbara Coward is the founder of Enrollment Strategies, a company that helps MBA candidates get into top schools and top schools recruit the best MBA candidates. She said that corporatespeak can be a quick way to get a message across.âWeâre living in a real fast-paced environment,â Coward said. âCorporatespeak is a shortcut.âWhen corporate jargon hurts us most: in the job searchThe problem arises when the language shortcut leads straight to a communication dead end. This is a particular danger for people who are changing caree rs, Coward said. Job-hunting can quickly become fraught.âIf youâre working in an emergency room, âstop the bleedingâ means something different than if youâre working at Amazon,â she said. âIf youâre switching sectors, thatâs something you need to keep in mind.âElizabeth Tarner, president of Tarner and Associates, said that corporatespeak can help build rapport among people internally, but using buzzwords with people who arenât familiar with them can mean theyâre trying so hard to figure out what youâre talking about that theyâre not hearing what youâre actually saying. Thatâs a huge barrier that could cause misunderstandings later. The cloudiness is especially apparent when it comes to abbreviations and acronyms.âClarity is a big issue â" it really is,â she said. âEven people who have really good communication skills arenât really clear all the time.âEven communication experts get tripped up sometimes. Tarner said years ago one of her studen ts used âLOLâ in an email. She thought it meant âlots of loveâ and was baffled by the excessive affection. And after seven years as a stay-at-home mom, Coward was once in a meeting with executives from Northrop Grumman, who were talking about âC-level executives.â She thought they were discussing âsea-level executives,â which makes sense given Northrop Grummanâs naval products.Ahoy.The real problem: we donât ask what it all meansWhen you donât understand something, âYou feel silly or stupid asking what that means,â Coward said. âItâs all about taking the time to really communicate and really understand one another.âLetâs be completely honest here. I contacted a couple of linguists expecting that theyâd back up my own personal thesis that corporatespeak is awful and terrible and nobody who wants to be understood should ever use it.It didnât quite work out that way.In fact, I learned that terrible corporatespeak actually serves the almost tribal pu rpose to allowing experts to communicate easily with each other.âCorporate speak falls under the category that linguists would call jargon. Itâs the specialized language used in a field or area of knowledge, and it applies equally to rocket scientists and surfers,â said Carmen Fought, a linguistics professor at Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif. âAnybody who has a specialized knowledge of an area has a specific way of talking about particular concepts that are important.âKirk Hazen, linguistics professor at West Virginia University, agreed. He said itâs completely natural that groups develop ways of talking that are specific to that group â" and also completely natural that other groups complain about it.âThis is a process that all humans do,â he said. âEvery generation develops new slang. ⦠Itâs very old in Western culture to complain about teenagers making new slang.âThe annoyance people feel is probably due in part to the discomfort of being part of the âout group,â Hazen said. He said itâs not so different from when an eager 18-year-old heads off to college. They might come back for Thanksgiving break bearing not just loads of literal dirty laundry, but also new words, opinions and experiences, which can be alienating to parents or others at home.âItâs more than just words. Itâs about community and culture,â he said. âIf those differences are highlighted, then sometimes people can react negatively.âThere are no new language complaints under the sunHazen said that concerns about corporatespeak and other language trends tend to come in waves. He said heâs noticed an uptick in hand-wringing over workplace jargon in the past year or so. In previous years, the controversies were around texting, or âebonics.âThat doesnât mean that jargon never causes problems, Hazen and Fought both said. In particular, cross-cultural communication is more difficult if people are using corporatespeak, because idioms â" or expre ssions that canât be deciphered through words alone, like âraining cats and dogsâ â" are notoriously difficult to translate.âAn expression like âtime is moneyâ makes perfect sense to us but might seem strange in, letâs say a South American culture where the idea of time is more flexible,â Fought said. And even linguists â" who understand its utility and appreciate how languages evolve â" admit to being annoyed by corporatespeak occasionally.âNot being a member of a corporation, the whole idea irritates me, and I could see how an outsider to that culture might find it annoying in the sense of wanting people to just say what they mean instead of dressing it up with these fancy words,â Fought said.Still, sheâs not judging.âDespite what others might think, linguists are the least judgmental people on the planet about language,â she said. âWe can have personal opinions like anyone else, but when weâre in a professional capacity, we know that everything th at happens with language happens for a reason, and our job is to understand it, not judge it.âYou can say that again.

The Ricky Gervais Guide to a Successful Career
The Ricky Gervais Guide to a Successful Career The Ricky Gervais Guide to a Successful Career After Ricky Gervais insulted most of the Hollywood elite at the 2011 Golden Globes, a friend of mine declared: âHis career is over. Hell never work in America again.â I understood where he was coming from. After all, Gervais had called Bruce Willis âAshton Kutcherâs dad,â claimed that the President of the Hollywood Foreign Press needed help to use the bathroom, and joked about Robert Downey Jr.âs drug problems. But I also knew my friend was wrong. I knew it because Iâve followed Gervaisâs career for a while now and I know just how smart he is. In watching him, Ive learned some valuable career (and life) lessons and I think you can too. Being true to yourself is the only way to do truly great work. Ricky never tones down what heâs doing to avoid offending some people. Nor does he conduct focus groups to find out what his audience wants. He believes in what hes doing, he pours himself 100% into his work, and then he lets the reaction be whatever it is going to be. As a result, lots of us show up each time he puts out something new. We donât know if it will be the best thing heâs ever done, but we know it will be interesting and original. The same is true on a smaller scale with careers blogger Penelope Trunk who gives advice that is sometimes brilliant and sometimes a little scary but always completely honest, always unique. As a result, she has a loyal cadre of readers who show up week in and week out. You cant please everyone, but you can please the right people. In Rickys case, the âright peopleâ are the ones who appreciate his humor and share his worldview. Theyre never offended by his jokes because they understand the intention. They love his work and evangelize it to others. It doesnt matter that some people hate his shows as long as some people love them. The same applies to any kind of creative career the marketer cant make everyone love his product. The designer cant appeal to everyone with his websites. The resume writer cant attract the attention of every hiring manager. But if you know your target audience and create work theyll appreciate, youll always be OK. The safe road is never the most interesting and ultimately isnt the most lucrative. Rickyâs first big hit was the original UK version of âThe Office.â It ran for only 14 episodes. The safe move would have been to keep going but instead, he called a halt after just two short seasons, and moved on to a new project. Crazy? Not at all. âThe Officeâ was so original, interesting and appealing that the rights sold in more than 80 countries, generating huge income for Gervais. The same recently happened with his new show âDerekâ which is coming to the US via Netflix on September 12th. (If you have Netflix, give it a shot â" itâs genuinely brilliant). If Ricky stuck with safe projects, this global success wouldnt happen. It comes because he constantly takes creative risks. Be generous with your success. We all know the employee who is afraid of being outshone. But Gervais knows thatâs a sure route to mediocrity. Instead he surrounds himself with brilliant people and allows them to step into the limelight. Take Karl Pilkington, who went from being an unknown radio producer to having his own wildly popular TV show simply because Ricky saw his genius and shared it with everyone else. Heâs also generous in using his success to help others. One British celebrity, who once suffered a nationally televised nervous breakdown, has credited his career revival to roles in two of Rickyâs shows. Worrying about how you are perceived doesnt get you anywhere. Worrying about how much value you add does. I canât imagine that Ricky Gervais spends much time worrying about his âpersonal brand.â But I do think he takes great care to do the best work he can possibly do. And as a result, he has a reputation so powerful that when I last checked he had over four and half million followers on Twitter. The same applies to you. Instead of worrying about whether you have a strong âpersonal brand,â worry about whether youâre making a difference. Ask if youâre doing work that anyone else cares about. The web designer who creates eye-catching, beautifully constructed sites builds a good reputation (or a âpersonal brandâ) without ever having to think about it. Itâs simple but not easy ⦠None of this is rocket science, but itâs also hard advice to follow. Itâs scary to take creative risks. Itâs hard sometimes to remember that you canât (and shouldnât) try to please everyone. And itâs a challenge to always give your very best, even on those days when maybe you donât feel like it. But if I look back over my own career, I can see that my best days were those on which I used one of more of these strategies. And my worst times were those where maybe I skated by a little bit. I bet youâd say the same thing. As for Ricky, his career didnât end after the Golden Globes. In fact the opposite happened. His fame increased, he became much more visible in the US, and he was even invited back to present the awards the following year.
